Carving
Carving, the act of shaping material using tools, originated during prehistoric times, witnessed in bone and ivory sculptures. Stone carving emerged as a central part of ancient civilisations, notable in Egyptian pyramids and Greek temples. The Middle Ages refined wood carving, vital in church altarpieces and furniture. The Renaissance elevated carving into an art form, with exquisite relief work in marble. The Industrial Revolution led to machine carving, but artisanal hand carving persisted. Today, while digital technologies aid complex projects, traditional carving techniques are still valued in artistic, restoration, and craft contexts.
